Six Basic English Prepositions
Nov 08, 2023Prepositions are words that tell us where something is in relation to something else.
Here are the rules for using the following prepositions:
- Next to (al lado de): This means that something is beside or adjacent to another item.
- In (en): This means that something is inside of another item.
- On (encima de): This means that something is resting or sitting on top of something else.
- Behind (detrás de): This means that something is located at the back of another thing.
- Under (debajo de): This means that something is located beneath or below another item.
- In front of (delante de): This means that something is located at the front of something.
Now, let's look at some examples of prepositional phrases related to items in the kitchen:
- There are pots and pans next to the stove.
- A carton of milk is in the refrigerator.
- There is a cutting board on the counter.
- The window is behind the sink.
- A dog is sleeping under the table.
- The kitchen island is in front of the refrigerator.
The kitchen is a busy place, and we really like the way we can prepare meals there. Because the stove is next to the sink, it is easy to wash vegetables and to clean up after cooking. There is also a good amount of counter space in our kitchen. This is helpful because we can set many different things on the counters. In one area, we have a coffee pot and in another area, we keep a bowl of fresh fruit. When we bake cookies in the oven, we can easily place the cookie sheet safely on the counter to cool. Then, the whole kitchen smells wonderful. As we sit at the table eating the delicious cookies, our dog sits under the table waiting for cookie crumbs to fall to the floor. Soon, it is time to wash the dishes and to clean up the kitchen. We always keep the dish soap and sponge behind the sink. That way, we can clean up easily. Needless to say, the kitchen is a busy place where we always come together as a family--to cook, eat, and enjoy each other's company.
